The Center of the World

Loch Finlaggan on the island of Islay is the center of the world or the place where time disappears. This is perhaps the most mystical lake in the world or at least in Scotland. Generally, we should recognize that every lake in this region turns out to be somehow special and unique: it either represents a sacred pentagram, or is inhabited by mystical animals, or is the center of the world, or happens to be the hiding place of the treasures of the Templars.

However, the historical facts demonstrate that Loch Finlaggan was the ritual lake of Scotland. It is located in the middle of the island to the west of Scotland, in an area that was the birthplace of the most powerful clan: the MacDonalds. The ceremonies held here were the harbingers of the concept of ritual and were connected with the Measure stone. Upon this stone the leader of the ceremony placed his foot, thus marking a process of revelation, when a special power was bestowed upon him. It was believed that the person who could connect with this stone, could control space.

This process was carried out in the following manner: a special stone from the family of the Stones of Destiny (made up of certain crystalline rocks) was placed in the center of the island, or in the center of the world. Through it, the island received the forces and the currents of space. The king or a priest, after three days of preparation, was plugged in the stone, as if in a socket, and if he could bear the energy, he confirmed his status, after which he spoke from the center of the world in conjunction with the space that linked him to the forces of the earth or the kings of Dál Riata.

All participants in the ceremony were given a special drink, that was fermented on the lake island and had a special mystic power. In all likelihood, this was something like a home-made ale from heather honey. The very space around lake Finlaggan is protected by hills, called The Paps of Jura (Sgurr na Cìche, Gaelic). Thus the area is somehow split so as to help the stone in the middle to broadcast certain currents.
